The Big Fist (Dust)

ArmidaleNSW

About

The Big Fist, officially titled 'Dust', rises along the New England Highway in Armidale. While some say it commemorates 16 August 1975, when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam stood beside Vincent Lingiari and returned 3,236 square kilometres of ancestral land to the Gurindji people in the Northern Territory, the artist Norton Flavel, has not made that claim. Though, he may be a fan of big things, having also created' Bulk Carrier', an enormous wine cask bag for another exhibition.

Fun Fact

The sculpture was originally exhibited at Sculpture By The Sea 2015 before being purchased to mark the entrance to a housing estate.
