The Big Prawn is Ballina's spectacular 9-metre maritime masterpiece! Weighing in at 35 tonnes, this iconic crustacean celebrates the region's rich fishing heritage and coastal identity. Built in 1989 and dramatically refreshed in 2013 with a brand-new tail section, the Big Prawn has become a beloved symbol of NSW coastal tourism. In 2009, this beloved icon faced scrap heap retirement but was lovingly rescued by Bunnings, who recognized its cultural significance. Fresh catches are sold just across the road at local markets, making this Big Thing a gateway to Ballina's seafood scene.
