Big Boxing Crocodile

Humpty DooNT

About

Standing 13 metres tall on the Stuart Highway near Humpty Doo, the Big Boxing Crocodile is the toughest reptilian fighter in the Northern Territory! This magnificent 7-tonne fibreglass warrior has been sporting red boxing gloves since 1987, inspired by Australia's legendary 1983 America's Cup win. The sculpture cost $137,000 to construct and was engineered to withstand even the fiercest tropical cyclones that sweep through the Top End. With its pugilistic pose and cheeky attitude, this Big Thing perfectly captures the larrikin spirit that defines Territory culture. It's become an iconic roadside attraction drawing travellers along one of Australia's most famous highways, celebrating both the region's crocodile heritage and its competitive, never-say-die attitude.

Fun Fact

Real saltwater crocodiles can bite with 3,700 pounds of force--enough to crush a bowling ball! The Big Boxing Croc's red gloves were a cheeky nod to the Americas Cup victory that made Australians feel unbeatable in the 1980s.
